Atlatl Competition

Every year, the weekend after Labor Day, Wahkpa Chu'gn Buffalo Jump hosts an atlatl competition and open house for the public. Members of the World Atlatl Association show up, atlatl in hand, to teach all participants the art of throwing an atlatl just like the Native American hunters of Wahkpa Chu'gn did. You can bring your own or atlatls for use by the public are provided! This is a two day event with all participants allowed to go through the atlatl target course as many times as they wish. You can "throw" both Saturday and Sunday. Prizes totaling $500 are awarded for the various events. People are invited to come out, have a great time and learn something new.

Guided tours of the archaeological exhibits are available during the competition.

No preregistration or entry fees are required, everything is free!

Stone Boiling Demonstrations

In the spring and fall months Wahkpa Chu'gn Buffalo Jump offers special tours to school children. During these school tours students are not only given a tour of the site and taught how to throw an atlatl, but as a special event are given the opportunity to participate in a stone boiling demonstration. The demonstration gives children a "hands on" experience of one way the Native Americans would have cooked the buffalo meat gathered from the site after the hunt. Students are allowed to cook their own buffalo meat and then can taste this piece of "history" if they wish.
